Panama City Beach’s Wild Side (And No, We Don’t Mean Party Animals)

When you think of Panama City Beach, what comes to mind? Sugar-white sand? Spring breakers? Maybe a sunset over the Gulf of Mexico with a cocktail in hand?

Beyond the lively boardwalks and crystal-clear surf, Panama City Beach hides a quieter, wilder side — one where alligators, ghost crabs, gopher tortoises, and even sea turtles live just steps from where tourists tan. For nature lovers, curious travelers, or families looking for more than just waves and sunburns, PCB is full of wild surprises.

Here are some of the most fascinating (and often overlooked) creatures you can find right here in Panama City Beach:

Gopher Tortoises – The Beach’s Unexpected Burrowers

Gopher Tortoise

You don’t need to hike deep into the wild to spot one of Florida’s coolest (and most important) reptiles — the gopher tortoise. These laid-back land turtles are often seen right here in Panama City Beach, especially in natural areas like Conservation Park, along Gayle’s Trails, or even near beach dunes with sandy soil.

What makes them special? Gopher tortoises are nature’s little excavators. They dig huge burrows — sometimes over 40 feet long! — that stay cool in the Florida heat. But they don’t keep them to themselves. Their burrows become underground condos for more than 350 other species, including frogs, snakes, lizards, and bugs. That’s why scientists call them a “keystone species” — without them, a bunch of other animals lose their homes.

You’ll often see gopher tortoises slowly munching on grasses and wildflowers or sunbathing near their burrows. They’re super chill and not aggressive at all, but they’re also protected by law, so no touching or bothering them.

Wild Tip: If you see a wide, round hole in the ground with a sandy entrance, you’ve probably found a tortoise burrow. Take a peek — from a distance — and let them do their thing. They’ve got important digging to do.

Ghost Crabs – The Nighttime Sprinters

Ghost Crab

Once the sun dips below the Gulf and the crowds head in for the night, the beach takes on a whole new vibe — quieter, cooler, and full of tiny flashes of motion. That’s when ghost crabs come out to play. With their pale, almost translucent shells and quick scuttling legs, these little critters are like the stealthy ninjas of Panama City Beach.

Ghost crabs get their name from their ghostly appearance and their ability to blend perfectly into the sand. You’ll barely spot them until they suddenly sprint sideways across your path — which makes them extra fun to search for at night. Locals and visitors alike love going on a “ghost crab hunt” after dark, armed with flashlights and a little patience. It’s a simple, free, and surprisingly thrilling nighttime beach activity — especially for kids.

You might find them near the high-tide line or around beach dunes, where they dig small burrows that can go a few feet deep. Despite their skittish nature, they’re constantly on the move — foraging, digging, or just trying to avoid being seen. To learn more about ghost crabs and other creatures that come out after dark, be sure to read one of our most popular blogs on our website, “What Are People Doing with Flashlights on the Beach?”

Wild Tip: Shine your flashlight briefly to spot them, but avoid keeping the beam on them for too long — it stresses them out. And definitely no touching! They may be small, but they’re still wild animals and deserve their space. A quick look and a quiet cheer for their crabby hustle is all part of the fun.

Dolphins – PCB’s Favorite Celebs

Dancing Dolphins

Dolphins are basically the rock stars of Panama City Beach — everyone wants to see them, and for good reason. They’re playful, graceful, and love putting on a show. Most people think you have to book a dolphin cruise or hop on a tour boat to catch a glimpse, but here’s a local secret: you can often spot dolphins right from shore — no ticket required.

Early mornings and just before sunset are prime time. You might see them leaping out of the water, cruising in pairs, or riding the waves near the sandbar. Some of the best dolphin-watching spots include the Russell-Fields Pier, St. Andrews State Park jetties, and even from your table at a beachfront restaurant (yes, dolphin sightings pair well with shrimp tacos).

But if you want to take a dolphin cruise, here’s a bonus: book your stay with us and get one free dolphin cruise ticket per day through our Xplorie program!

Wild Tip: Keep an eye out for jumping fish or diving seabirds — that usually means a school of fish is nearby, and dolphins won’t be far behind. Bonus points if you catch them surfing the boat wakes near Shell Island!

Alligators – Yes, They’re Around (But Safely Away)

No list of Florida wildlife would be complete without giving a shout-out to the alligators — those ancient, scaly creatures that have been around since the time of the dinosaurs. Now, don’t worry, you won’t find them sunbathing on the sandy beaches of Panama City Beach (thankfully!), but they’re definitely around in the inland lakes, ponds, marshes, and wetlands that dot the area.

If you want to catch a glimpse of these impressive reptiles, check out spots like Panama City Beach Conservation Park or Camp Helen State Park. These places have safe viewing areas where you might see a big gator chilling on the bank, soaking up the sun, or slowly cruising through the water. It’s pretty amazing to see them from a distance, but remember — they’re wild animals with serious jaws, so always keep a safe space between you and the gators.

Safety Tip: Never try to feed, touch, or get too close. It’s not only dangerous but also illegal in Florida. Admire these prehistoric-looking creatures from afar and let them do their thing in peace.

Birds of All Feathers – Panama City Beach’s Sky Show

If you’re into birdwatching (or just love winging it with some wildlife spotting), Panama City Beach is definitely for the birds—in the best way possible! Why? Because it sits right on the Mississippi Flyway, one of North America’s busiest “bird highways.” That means year-round, you get a nonstop parade of feathered friends flying through—from elegant great blue herons and soaring osprey to colorful warblers and even the occasional bald eagle showing off its talon-ted wingspan.

Birdwatching here isn’t just about checking off species; it’s about enjoying the whole “flock-tastic” experience. So grab your binoculars and head over to the elevated boardwalks at St. Andrews State Park or the chill vibes at Lake Powell in Camp Helen State Park. These spots give you prime views without ruffling any feathers. And hey, with a little luck, you might just spot a rare bird who’s clearly flying solo.

Be sure to check out our birdwatching blog, filled with tips and everything you need to know for successful birdwatching in Panama City Beach. And, don’t miss the chance to explore the breathtaking shots in our Reed Pike Gallery—see the full collection on our website. Reed is a professional photographer who soared above the rest by capturing our local wildlife in stunning fashion.

Pro Tip: Early mornings and late afternoons are prime bird-spotting times. And don’t forget your camera — these feathered visitors make for some amazing shots.

Bonus: Bioluminescent Plankton — Nature’s Glow-Up

Panama City Beach Shoreline

Every now and then, usually in the warm summer months, the shoreline of Panama City Beach pulls off one of nature’s coolest tricks: bioluminescent plankton lighting up the water like underwater fairy lights. On especially calm, moonless nights, you might notice a magical blue glow swirling around your feet as you walk through the shallows. It’s like the ocean’s own disco party — no neon needed!

Best time to catch the glow? Think mid to late summer, right around new moon phases when the sky is darkest. Head to quieter, less crowded parts of the beach, turn off your phone flashlight, and get ready to be wowed by Mother Nature’s light show.

Go With The Flow: Seeing these glowing critters is a rare and special treat. Remember, Panama City Beach isn’t just a vacation spot; it’s a living, breathing ecosystem. Whether you’re hiking, splashing, or just chilling by the water, be kind to the wildlife. Don’t poke, chase, or disturb the plankton or any other creatures. Leave only footprints, take only glowing memories.
