10 Emergency Questions to Ask Before Your Stay

A relaxing vacation is even better when you’re prepared. Before you check in, ask your host these key questions to ensure you know what to do in case of an emergency.

What is the local emergency contact number?

While 911 is standard in the United States, international destinations often have different emergency numbers for police, fire, and medical services. Confirm the correct number and make sure you have access to a phone—either your mobile device or a landline in the rental.

Where is the nearest hospital or urgent care center?

Ask for the address and contact info of nearby medical facilities. Urgent care centers are typically open during the day for minor issues, while hospital emergency rooms are better for serious or after-hours needs.

What should I do if there’s a fire?

Be familiar with the property’s fire safety plan. Know where the fire extinguishers and smoke detectors are located, and identify the best escape routes. In case of fire:

  • Pull the fire alarm (if available)
  • Call 911 immediately
  • Evacuate using the stairs, not elevators
  • Head to a safe outdoor location
  • Keep shoes and your phone nearby at night for quick access

Evacuation routes are often posted on the back of the entry door.

Is there a first aid kit available in the rental?

Check if there’s a first aid kit on-site and where it’s stored. It should include basics like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, antibacterial ointment, gauze, and gloves. If not, consider bringing your own travel-sized kit. Make sure it’s stocked with basic medical supplies such as bandages, anti-bacterial ointments, and antiseptic wipes.

What is the address of the rental property?

Make sure you know the full address, including building and unit numbers. This is critical for emergency responders if you ever need to call for help.

Who should I contact for maintenance issues?

Ask for a 24/7 contact for maintenance or emergency repairs—like power outages, water leaks, or broken locks. The host may provide this info before arrival or display it inside the unit.

Are there any safety instructions for using appliances and equipment?

If you’re unfamiliar with things like gas stoves, fireplaces, or heating systems, ask for usage instructions. Proper guidance can prevent accidents and damage.

What should I do in case of a natural disaster?

Find out what types of natural disasters are possible in the area (e.g., hurricanes, wildfires, earthquakes), and ask for instructions on what to do.  Know the nearest evacuation routes and whether the unit is stocked with emergency supplies.  Most rental properties will post the evacuation routes on the back of the exit door.

Is there a backup plan if the power goes out?

Ask if the rental has backup power options like a generator, battery-powered lights, or flashlights. Also inquire about emergency procedures if the outage lasts an extended time.

Are there any neighborhood or building-specific safety details I should know?

Some properties may be part of larger buildings or gated communities with specific rules, codes, or emergency exits.  Ask if there are unique safety instructions tied to the property’s location.  Some buildings will post rules, etc in the elevators so that’s always a good place to check.
