Heading out on an extended vacation or business trip? Before you lock the door behind you, take a few minutes to run through this checklist to ensure your home stays safe and worry-free while you’re away.

Have I informed a trusted neighbor or friend about my trip?

Let someone you trust know about your travel plans so they can monitor your home, collect your mail, or handle any unexpected issues.  Some local police departments also offer home watch services—check with yours to see if this is available.

Have I arranged for mail and deliveries to be paused or collected?

A full mailbox or packages piling up is a clear sign that no one’s home. Pause mail through USPS or ask a friend or neighbor to collect it regularly.

Are all doors and windows locked and secure?

Walk through your entire home and double-check that all windows, doors, and garage entries are locked and properly latched.

Have I set up timers for lights and electronics?

Use programmable timers to turn lights, radios, or TVs on and off to give the appearance that someone is home.

Is my home security system activated?

Make sure your alarm is armed and functioning properly. Test motion sensors, door contacts, and camera feeds. Let your security company know the dates you’ll be away.

Have I unplugged unnecessary electronics?

Unplug small appliances and electronics like toasters, coffee makers, and chargers to reduce fire risks and save energy.

Have I secured valuable items?

Store valuables such as jewelry, passports, and important documents in a safe or hidden spot. Consider using a safe deposit box for extra security.

Are outdoor areas secure?

Lock sheds, garages, and gates. Remove any hidden spare keys from under mats or flowerpots. Ensure motion-activated lights are working.

Have I checked smoke detectors and other safety devices?

Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they’re functioning properly. Replace batteries if needed.

Do I have emergency contact information readily available?

Share your itinerary and contact info with someone you trust.  Leave details about how to reach you in an emergency, and provide any important service contact numbers (security, HVAC, etc.).

Ensuring your home is prepped and ready for your time away is important and can provide a sense of security while you are away. Check out our website to start planning your next vacation!
