10+ Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Vacation Rental

Searching for your vacation rental can be stressful. You want to find the perfect place to stay, but how do you know if it’s too good to be true? Be reassured of your decision by asking the host the right questions before you book! Here are ten questions you should ask before booking your rental to ensure it’s the right fit for you!

What is the Total Price, Including Fees?

The nightly rate is only part of the cost. Be sure to ask for a breakdown of the total price, including cleaning fees, resort fees, service charges, and taxes. Some platforms display the total cost upfront, while others don’t show the full amount until checkout. Confirming this helps avoid sticker shock later.

Are Payment Plans Available?

If you’re planning ahead, check whether the host offers a payment plan. Some hosts allow you to make a deposit and pay the rest closer to your arrival date, while others may require full payment up front. Payment flexibility can make budgeting for your trip much easier.

Is There a Refundable Security Deposit?

Some properties require a security deposit to cover potential damages, while others do not. Ask whether there is a refundable deposit, how much it is, and when it will be returned after checkout. Also, confirm what might cause you to forfeit the deposit, so there are no surprises.

How Does Check-in/Check-out Work?

One of the most important questions you may ask about your vacation rental is how check-in and check-out work. Does the unit have keyless entry, or do you have to pick up the keys at another location? Is there a desk at the resort that you need to go to before you can check into the condo? If you need to pay the resort directly, do they offer discounts for registering early? Every resort requires registration for their guests, so it’s important to understand how the registration works and what you need to do to register.

What needs to be done upon check-out? Do you need to leave the wristbands in the unit? Do you need to physically check out upon departure? Your host should be able to answer all of these questions before you book, giving you peace of mind that the rental will work for you.

What is the Cancellation Policy?

Each host will have a varying cancellation policy.  Is there free cancellation? If so, when do you need to cancel? If not, what is the cancellation fee? No one ever anticipates canceling their vacation, but you need to expect the unexpected. If there is no free cancellation policy, does the host have recommendations for travel insurance? Travel insurance can help protect you when the unexpected happens. Your host can help you understand why travel insurance is important. You can also read our blog post about travel insurance to help you understand.

How Many Cars Can I Bring and How Much Is Parking?

Each property has different rules regarding how many vehicles you can park in the parking garage at once. Many resorts include a parking pass with the mandatory resort fee, which is typically assessed by the resort separately from your host. Many resorts allow some units to have a second vehicle in the garage, depending on the size of the unit you are renting. So, what do you do if the resort only allows one car and you need a second or a third? You can ask your host if they offer alternative parking options, such as upgraded private parking that doesn’t count toward your allotted main garage passes. If they don’t offer alternative parking options, they should be able to point you toward public parking alternatives.

What Happens in the Event of a Hurricane?

When vacationing in Florida from June until the end of November, tropical storms or hurricanes can occur. Don’t let the fear of a hurricane ruin your vacation. Ask your host all the questions you have so you can feel confident in your decision. Any host that manages rentals in areas that are prone to hurricanes should be able to answer your questions and help you be prepared. Some hosts will even do storm updates periodically for their guests to be able to stay informed. You can follow hurricanes yourself through the National Hurricane Center. You can also follow along with Premium Beach Condos storm updates for the latest that will affect the Panama City Beach and Santa Rosa Beach areas. You can also read our blog post about hurricane preparedness.

Where is the Unit Located?

It is important to understand where the unit you are considering renting is located. Be sure to ask the host what resort the unit is located in and what floor it is on. Is the unit close to the activities you plan on doing during your stay? In order to know if the unit is right for you, consider what is important to you. Do you want a beachfront unit? Do you want to be within walking distance of local shops, restaurants, and attractions? Think about the important things in regards to your vacation rental location so that your host can point you in the right direction.

Are There Any Rules for the Rental?

Before you book, it is essential to know what the house rules are for the rental you are considering to know if it will be a good fit for your vacation. By understanding the house rules, you will be able to determine if you want to stay at a rental. Does the unit allow pets?  Are there vaccine requirements for Service Dogs?  What are the quiet hours? How many guests are allowed in the unit? Knowing the house rules will help answer the majority of your questions regarding each unit you are considering.

How Many Beach Chairs are Included and How Do They Work?

When renting a beach condo, some hosts will include beach chairs with the rental. It is important to know how many beach chairs are included with the rental and how they work. Each resort has different rules and policies for its beach chair service. Here are some good questions to ask about beach chairs: How many chairs are included with the rental? Are we able to purchase more? How do we reserve our beach chairs? Do we need to reserve our chairs each day or do we get the same chairs for the duration of our stay?  Are there additional chairs available inside the condo?

What is the Area like in the Off-Season?

If you are visiting during an area’s “off-season,” it’s important to understand what that looks like. Oftentimes, during the off-season, you will see a huge decrease in crowds which may mean that some local businesses will close until there are bigger crowds to support their business. Before visiting, you will want to know what to expect. If there are certain places that you want to visit you should ask if the host knows if they will be open during your stay. Knowing what to expect in the off-season is important for setting your expectations before your vacation so that you can still have an amazing time!

Is Transportation Available to and from the Airport?

When flying to your destination, you need to have a plan for how you are going to get to your vacation rental. Does your host have transportation included for your stay, or do they have connections to reliable transportation? When staying with Premium Beach Condos, we have two partners who can provide our guests with airport transportation for a very reasonable cost. Not many hosts will have transportation included in the rental, but they will be able to help you find the right transportation for your group to get you where you need to go. Your host is an expert on the area you are staying in and has the knowledge to help you; all you have to do is ask!

Do you Have Preferred Partners for Deliveries or Activities?

Some hosts will have preferred partners that can improve your experience during your stay. Does your host have free activities included with your stay or have a partner that provides free activities? If they don’t provide free activities do they have access to any discounts for you to use during your stay? The other preferred partners that you may see with different hosts are for deliveries. Some hosts will have vetted partners that you can hire before your arrival to your arrival that will deliver your groceries or other necessities. They may even be able to decorate your condo for a special occasion you may be celebrating! At Premium Beach Condos, we partner with CondoCierge who can provide many different services to make your arrival as seamless as possible.

Your host is here to help you to have a memorable vacation so they want to answer your questions. If you have any questions or concerns from a previous stay, whether it’s with the same host or a different host, you can discuss it with your host before you book. This can help you to know how the host will handle different situations that might arise and help you to feel confident in booking their unit. Now that you know all the questions to ask your host, it’s time to find the best property for you! You can check out our website and inquire about any of our properties to start asking the questions you want answers to before you book your vacation!
