Game, Set, Match: Announcing Pickleball at Gulf Place, Santa Rosa Beach, FL

The Gulf Place Residences, a beautifully designed condominium community tucked into the heart of 30A, just raised the bar on resort-style living. With the exciting addition of three brand-new pickleball courts, Gulf Place Residences continues to deliver the lifestyle experience that owners and guests have come to love — combining modern luxury with active, coastal living.

As pickleball continues to be the fastest-growing sport in America, with over 19.8 million pickleball players nationwide according to the Association of Pickleball Professionals, Gulf Place Residences has taken notice. The newly installed courts are located conveniently within the community grounds, offering easy access for residents who want to play a quick game or hone their skills in a more relaxed setting.

Pickleball vs Tennis: How the Game is Played and What Sets Them Apart

Pickleball has rapidly grown from a quirky backyard game into one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S.—and for good reason. It’s fun, fast-paced, social, and relatively easy to learn. But as more tennis courts get adapted for pickleball play, many wonder: How exactly is pickleball different from tennis, especially when they sometimes share the same court?

Let’s break it down….

How Pickleball is Played

Pickleball is often described as a mix of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes (think a wiffle ball), and it can be played either singles or doubles, though doubles is more common.

The Basics:

  • Serve: The game begins with an underhand serve that must land in the opponent’s diagonal service court.
  • The Double Bounce Rule: After the serve, each side must let the ball bounce once before hitting it. After these two bounces, the ball can be volleyed or played off the bounce.
  • The “Kitchen”: There’s a 7-foot no-volley zone on either side of the net called the “kitchen.” Players can’t hit a volley (a shot taken out of the air) while standing in this area.
  • Scoring: Only the serving team can score. Games are typically played to 11 points, win by 2.

Pickleball emphasizes placement, strategy, and reflexes over power, making it ideal for players of all ages.

Pickleball on a Tennis Court: Same Space, Different Game

One reason pickleball is expanding so rapidly is its ability to share space with tennis. Many tennis courts are now “striped” for pickleball with different colored lines. However, the dimensions and play areas are very different:

Court Size Comparison:

  • Tennis Court: 78 feet long x 36 feet wide (for doubles)
  • Pickleball Court: 44 feet long x 20 feet wide

This means you can actually fit up to four pickleball courts on one standard tennis court!

Net Height:

  • A tennis net is 36 inches at the posts, 34 inches in the center.
  • A pickleball net is similar, but slightly lower across the entire net (34 inches center, 36 inches posts is standard too, but it’s adjusted for pickleball-specific setups).

Movement and Play Style:

  • In tennis, players cover a large area, hitting high-speed serves and groundstrokes with power.
  • In pickleball, movement is tighter and more strategic. Players often rally close to the net, looking for opportunities to “dink” (a soft shot that lands in the kitchen) and control the tempo.

How Pickleball is Different from Tennis

While both sports involve hitting a ball over a net, there are several major differences:

Feature Tennis Pickleball
Equipment Racket and pressurized felt ball Solid paddle and plastic ball
Serve Overhand or underhand Underhand only
Scoring Love, 15, 30, 40, game Straight points, only serve scores
Ball Bounce Playable off single bounce Double bounce rule applies
Court Size Larger Smaller, even when sharing space
Speed & Power Fast-paced, power-driven More about control and precision
No-Volley Zone Not applicable 7-foot kitchen zone

Final Thoughts: Different Games, Same Fun

Though they share some basic principles—and sometimes even the same court—tennis and pickleball are very different games. Tennis rewards athleticism, endurance, and power, while pickleball leans into agility, control, and quick reflexes.

Pickleball offers an accessible and exciting experience that’s quickly capturing hearts (and courts) around the world.

Live, Stay, Play

Whether you’re a full-time resident, snowbird, or someone enjoying a short vacation, the Gulf Place Residences offers a community-centered atmosphere where luxury meets laid-back coastal living. The new pickleball courts are just another example of how Gulf Place continues to invest in lifestyle-enhancing features for those lucky enough to call it home — even if only for a little while.

Please note: The new pickleball courts are exclusive to Gulf Place Residences owners and registered guests. This helps maintain a quieter, less crowded experience.

Gulf Place 301 offers a comfortable, well-located stay in Santa Rosa Beach. Overlooking the amphitheater, it’s just a short walk to the beach, pools, hot tubs, and local shops. Guests can also enjoy easy access to the new pickleball courts and the 30A bike path—making it a great spot to relax and explore the area.
