Red Tide: What Vacation Rental Travelers Should Know

What is Red Tide?

Red tide is a common name for a phenomenon known as harmful algal blooms (HABs), which occur when colonies of algae—simple plants that live in the sea and freshwater—grow out of control while producing toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and birds.  The name “red tide” comes from the reddish-brown color that these algal blooms can cause in the water, although they can also be green, yellow, or even brown.

How to Monitor Red Tide
  1. Local Government and Environmental Agencies:  Many coastal regions have government or environmental agencies that monitor and report on water quality, including the presence of red tide.  Check their websites or contact them directly for the most up-to-date information.  For Panama City Beach, we typically use the Florida Fish & Wildlife site to monitor the local maps and outbreaks.
  2. Online Resources:  Websites like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provide current conditions and forecasts for red tide in many areas.
  3. Social Media and News Outlets:  Local news stations and social media platforms often share real-time updates on red tide occurrences.
  4. Mobile Apps:  Apps like the “Beach Conditions Reporting System” can provide real-time updates and alerts for beachgoers.
Should I Be Concerned?

Red tide can have various impacts on your vacation:

  • Health Risks:  Breathing in airborne toxins from red tide can cause respiratory irritation, especially for people with asthma or other respiratory conditions.  Direct contact with contaminated water can cause skin irritation and burning eyes. Consuming contaminated shellfish can lead to severe poisoning.
  • Environmental Impact:  Red tide can result in fish kills and damage to marine ecosystems, impacting the natural beauty of the area.
  • Recreational Activities:  Swimming, fishing, and other water activities might be restricted or unpleasant during a red tide bloom.
Precautions to Take
  1. Stay Informed:  Keep up-to-date with local red tide reports and follow any advisories or warnings.
  2. Avoid Affected Areas:  If a red tide is reported, it’s best to avoid swimming or engaging in water activities in affected areas.  Even walking along the beach can expose you to airborne toxins.
  3. Protect Your Health:  If you have respiratory issues, avoid areas where red tide is present.  Use air conditioning if staying nearby to reduce exposure to airborne toxins.
  4. Be Cautious with Seafood:  Do not harvest or eat shellfish from areas affected by red tide, as they can be contaminated with toxins even if cooked.
  5. Take Care of Pets:  Keep pets away from the water and prevent them from eating dead fish or algae on the shore.
An Annual Cycle on the Florida Coast

It’s important to understand that red tide is a natural occurrence, particularly along the Florida coast.  These algal blooms typically happen annually, most often between late summer and early fall, though they can occur at any time of the year.  The frequency and intensity of red tide events can vary, influenced by a range of factors including water temperature, salinity, and nutrient levels.  Being aware of this annual cycle can help you plan your activities and stay prepared during your visit.

Adapting Your Plans: Make Different Memories

If you find that red tide is concentrated in your vacation area, there’s no need to cancel your travel plans.  Instead, consider exploring other activities and making different memories.  Enjoy inland attractions, visit local museums, try out new restaurants, or take a scenic drive to unaffected beaches or nature reserves.  Check out our Off The Beachin’ Path blog series for additional excursion ideas.  By being flexible and open to new experiences, you can still have a wonderful and memorable vacation despite the red tide.

While red tide can be a concern during your vacation, staying informed and taking proper precautions can help ensure you have a safe and enjoyable trip.  By monitoring local reports and avoiding affected areas, you can still enjoy your vacation rental without the negative impacts of red tide.  Remember, there are always alternative activities and new memories to be made, even if your original beach plans need to be adjusted.
