Let’s face it, some of us love the sand and surf and soaking up the sun. But, if you’re like my husband, he does not enjoy a day at the beach. He works in the sun and heat all day long and he seeks the indoors and cooler temps after his long day. So, I always take the time to share some “off the beachin’ path” time with my husband if we’re at the beach vacationing. We really enjoy shopping in general, but there is something so awesome about spending the day together antiquing.
Antiquing, to us, is like a treasure hunt, so antique stores are like huge treasure chests AND it’s the closest we’ll ever be to treasure hunting! You just never know what you’re going to find. It might seem boring to some, but we find it exciting and strangely relaxing! We never pass up a booth as we’re afraid we’ll miss something and there is something for everyone! We really enjoy finding and repurposing beautiful vintage items in our home. Our goal is to find something that was loved and used for many years and give it a new life. Every now and then, I see things that are nostalgic to me that I remember my grandparents or parents had in their homes.
Some Helpful Hints To Make Your Treasure Hunt More Enjoyable:
- Know what attracts you so you can have an idea of what you’re looking for when you go in. Think of your home and any spaces that might need some sprucing up.
- Try to be creative on how to use a great find. Perhaps an old copper pitcher that you could place on a table with some fresh flowers or greenery in it. Or an antique plate that you can place on a plate holder to stand up on an empty corner table. Maybe an old antique clock to paint and give new life for your fireplace mantel. The possibilities are endless if your give some thought as to how you could intermingle something old into the decor you already have.
- Be sure to just relax and don’t be in a hurry or you will miss something. Look under things and over things and above you and all around things. Like I said, don’t get in a hurry to move on to the next booth or you might miss that one item you can’t live without. BUT, with that said, be sure to look in EVERY booth even if it doesn’t appear to be one you’d like. I’ve found so many great items in booths that didn’t look like it would be up my alley.
- Last, but not least, it is okay to ask for a lower price on a find. They might not be able to reduce a price unless they talk to the owner of the booth, but it’s often worth the try as often they are given permission to discount a certain percentage by the owner. Mom always said “it doesn’t hurt to ask”.
