Don’t forget your SUNSCREEN!

The fabulous sun in Florida is hotter than you think, especially if you’re from up North. It’s so easy to underestimate the heat and UV rays. Sun poisoning and heat stroke are real issues so during your trip this season remember to:

Wear Sunscreen When Outside

When choosing a sunscreen, use an SPF of 30 or higher.  Be sure to check your sunscreen’s expiration date, and make sure that your sunscreen blocks BOTH UVA and UVB rays.  If you have sensitive skin, look for a sunscreen without PABA or fragrances.  Look for Zinc or Titanium UV filters instead.

Apply your sunscreen thoroughly, and then reapply every few hours or when getting out of the water.  Don’t forget to protect your lips and eyelids too.  At any sign of burning – cover up or get out of the sun.

Drink LOTS of PLAIN WATER

Drinking PLAIN water is the key to staying hydrated.  Drink water even when you don’t feel thirsty.  Experts say you need 8 oz for every 20 minutes in the sun.
Try to limit Caffeine and Alcohol too.  Both will dehydrate you.  But let’s face it, this is vacation, so if you do have a Frozen Margarita or a cold Beer, be sure to balance it with at least double the amount of plain water. (2 bottles of water for every bottle of beer).

Wear a Hat and Sunglasses

Protect the sensitive areas of your body, and don’t forget your eyes and the back of your neck.  Wearing a hat will help to shade your face and neck.  Sunglasses will also protect your eyes from glare.  If an umbrella is available, be sure to take breaks from the sun under the umbrella, although that will not completely eliminate sun exposure.

Take Periodic Breaks from the Sun

As much as we love the sun and want to maximize our time absorbing the rays, too much of a good thing can be harmful.  — The pool or ocean will cool your temperature but will not protect your skin.  Spend some time in the shade or inside periodically.

KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEATSTROKE!

  • Skin that is hot to the touch
  • Excessive sweating
  • Dizziness or disorientation
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Dark and/or frequent urination

If you experience any of these symptoms, get out of the sun immediately and drink fluids.  If symptoms persist, seek medical attention immediately.

Fun in the Sun is NO FUN if someone gets burned or sick.  Use these tips to help you enjoy your beach vacation!
